Project Description

Ruben Pekary

How long have you lived in the bay area?

I was raised in East Palo Alto and then went to school in LA. The traffic plus the heat made me move back in 2018 after college and I have lived here ever since.

What is your fondest childhood memory?

My grandparents had a lake house near Yosemite and it was basically a never ending source of cookies, soda, and kayaking. It had a tree by the dock that would rustle in the wind while I fished for crappie and trout and during 4th of July, we would watch the fireworks on the lake. Definitely my “happy place”.

What subject(s) did you study at College?

I studied accounting through graduate school and also got a minor in biblical studies

What was your first job?

Working the cash register in high school at McDonalds.

Who has been the most influential person to you in your career?

My mom had her CPA and somehow tricked me into pursuing a similar career, Thanks Mom!

How has your career created value in your life?

My career has made me become much more detailed and people focused, in addition to understanding and owning things better.

What do you consider to be the most significant world event that has occurred during your lifetime?

Probably Obama becoming president or the “.com” era, either one works.

What is your most memorable travel experience?

We were visiting my family in Madrid for Christmas and had just gotten engaged, and my fiancé and I took my little brother and sister on a cheap trip to Paris. We all shared a very cold Airbnb while the yellow vest riots were going on. On top of getting a bunch of cheap souvenirs, we ate in small cafes from Notre Dame to the Eiffel Tower, figured out the metro system, and had the world’s best almond croissants. Probably one of the most surreal and coldest trip I’ve ever gone on.

What is the funniest thing that’s ever happened to you?

When I was 14, my little sister and I arrived at a Quinceañera late so we missed the food. But when I went into the community center’s kitchen to see if there was anything left, there happened to be a plate of brownies on the counter. I ended up accidently eating two pot brownies, and had to call my mom thirty minutes later to pick us up because I didn’t know what was going on.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

Completing my masters in under a year while working full time and managing 5 tenants. I gained 20 pounds and a good bit of student loans for that piece of paper, but it was worth it!

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Sports, violin, scrolling through accounting memes, hanging out with my wife, and strategy computer games.

If you could possess one super-human power, what would it be?

Speed, The Flash is one of my favorite superheroes.
