Project Description

Marilyn AldenBusiness Operations Analyst

How long have you lived in the bay area?

I am a true local. I have lived in the Bay Area all of my life! I was born and raised in Burlingame, CA. I didn’t venture far for college and attended the University of California, Berkeley. I now reside in San Mateo County with my husband and 3 children.

What is your fondest childhood memory?

One of my fondest childhood memories is cleaning the house with my mom while dancing to The Twist by Chubby Checker.

What subject(s) did you study at College?

I explored engineering but soon learned that the classes that I loved most allowed me to fulfill all general business courses with a double major in Economics and Business Administration and an emphasis in Accounting and Finance.

What was your first job?

I began working around age 5 at my father’s dry cleaner checking in clothes, steaming and removing lint from clothes, folding and wrapping sweaters and even placing the white guards on wire hangers – very manual labor! My first job in high school was as a Kelly Girl; that’s a temp agency in case you not familiar with the term. Straight from college, I began my career in public accounting with KPMG.

Who has been the most influential person to you in your career?

My parents have had a life-long influence on me and have instilled in me a strong work ethic and a desire to excel in everything that I tackle! The CFO, CEOs and CIO at one company that I formerly worked with were tremendously influential because they supported, entrusted and empowered me to go beyond traditional roles in varying disciplines within the company. It was a time in my career when I felt I could spread my wings and have the wind beneath my wings.

How has your career created value in your life?

My career is rewarding because it allows me to enjoy a personal interest that challenges me and utilizes my skills and talents beyond all the hats that I wear in my personal life. My career is unique to me. It is rewarding because I am able to use my talents to help others excel in their professional expertises and talents; I get to serve my colleagues as well as my clients.

What do you consider to be the most significant world event that has occurred during your lifetime?

We’ve been living with it in the USA since March 2020 – The Pandemic of COVID-19. How can I even encapsulate it’s world impact let alone the personal impact while raising 3 children, caring for elderly parents, co-workers, the dynamics of friends and family and even the person walking on the other side of the street. What an opportunity to shower people with grace, love and care.

What is your most memorable travel experience?

As a 5th generation American Born Chinese, far removed from my cultural heritage, I loved visiting my ancestral village and many top attractions in China in 1987. I was able to be fully immersed in my families’ heritage and the natural beauties and rich history and culture of China for 6 weeks.

What is the funniest thing that’s ever happened to you?

Unfortunately, funny translates to embarrassing. Let me just share some words of wisdom – Cesna 172s do not have restrooms. Also, if you choose to wear your mother’s classic 30 year old vintage dress it would be wise to have the stitches replaced with new thread before wearing it.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

I am honored and proud of raising 3 children. God has given me the responsibility and privilege of raising them and having the joy of rejoicing with them over their accomplishments.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love sharing new experiences and outdoor activities with my family. I enjoy tennis, biking, hiking, gardening, cooking new recipes and baking.

If you could possess one super-human power, what would it be?

If I were super-human, I would want to be Iron Woman. Although I wouldn’t have “real” super-human powers, I would have ingenious talents, be filthy rich, be able to fly, drive fast cars and save people, with forgiven destruction along the way.
